Before we go into what’s in – what’s out and current style options the history of this footgear. Talk about a trend that lasts. Sandals date back to 8,000 BC,  were crafted from woven materials like grasses and leaves. Over time, they evolved, with variations appearing in different cultures and regions.

Ancient Egypt:
Sandals were worn by both the wealthy and the “common” people. The elite elaborately decorated theirs while the others stayed very basic.

Ancient Greece:
Sandals were a common footwear choice for both men and women, with two major variations baxeae (worn by comic actors and philosophers) made from twigs and leaves and cothurnus (a more substantial or boot sandal worn by dramatic actors) .

Ancient Rome:
Soldiers, gladiators, and civilians all wore sandals, often made of leather.

My guess is that the Roman version is the foundation for most of the other versions which followed. For sure the lace up Gladiator style which sadly is not having a moment, and let’s be honest are not the easiest to wear.

Japan:
Geta, the traditional wooden sandals, became popular for practical reasons, like keeping the heavy and elaborate clothing off the ground think beautiful robes with Obi sashes. They also, facilitated the easy removal of shoes when entering homes.

United States:
Flip-flops, have been worn for thousands of years, with evidence dating back to Egypt around 4000 BC.  Seems to me that Ancient Egyptians were the Fashion trend setters as so many of our garments still use their structure, materials, colors and practicality or impracticality today. The modern rubber version emerged in Japan after World War II and was introduced to the West in the 1950’s.

Fast forward to Summer 2025 so what is in and what is on the way out. The changes are subtle in this fashionista’s opinion. Enduring style items are always my favorite but summer is a great time to experiment with more trendy items. The sandals pictured here are a perfect example. They are mine and are the perfect blend of old and new, are extremely comfortable and don’t you just love the color a new kind of neutral. The spent a month on my feet recently in Italy and were perfect in every way.

Trending now are fisherman sandals and if you want to really up the game get them in raffia and double down. Always popular regardless of the season is the classic slide, closed toe for cooler weather and of course open toe to show off a bright colored nail polish. Either season there are a plethora of colors and materials to choose from. Very fun way to add a pop of color to any outfit

On the outs Gladiators as mentioned above and really tall platform . I know for those of us who want those extra 4 inches in height it is a bummer. Another shift is going from sandals  made of jelly to pvc, not a big deal as they look pretty similar so don’t purge. Same for the gladiators and platforms, if you can put them away as everything olde is new again in time.

Dress for the day you want – NOT – the day you are given.
