I had certainly never heard of them until I was at my girlfriend Sharon Williams’ custom tailor shop, and she introduced me to them (photos are of her creations). Regardless, they make so much sense and are a super easy way to jazz up a plain non plus outfit. And the ability to make a regular cuff look like a French cuff as button covers take the place of cuff links.
Turns out they are not a modern invention and date back to Pre-19th Century era. Buttons were actually originally pure ornamentation way before they were used as fasteners. Actually, during the Renaissance and Victorian eras buttons were treated like fine jewelry. They were typically covered in silk, velvet, or leather which complimented the ensemble.
The 19th Century (Rise of Functional Fasteners): The invention of the button shank in 1844 gave rise to functional fasteners, fabric-covered buttons became highly standardized. Those looking to elevate inexpensive everyday clothing used bespoke button covers, which began to resemble miniature pieces of jewelry.
The 1980s & 1990s (The Golden Age): Button covers became an absolute phenomenon in 1980s and 1990s fashion. Driven by a cultural demand for bold, maximalist accessories, brands and artisans produced button covers in mass quantities, pairing them with the popular gold and faux-pearl statement jewelry of the era.
The Modern Era: Today, button covers have evolved into a niche but stylish styling tool. They are particularly popular for updating formal wear, modifying work uniforms, or adding a touch of vintage flair to modern, minimalist clothing.

How do They Work?
Quite easily, modern button covers generally come in two styles:
- Snap Closures: The top of the cover is hinged. You pry it open, place it over your garment’s button, and snap the back tightly shut.
- Slide-On Backs: The back features a small, flexible U-shaped clip that slides securely over the button on your clothing.
Clever item anyway you look at them and great way to customize any outfit to be specific for a holiday or dress up or down.
